Develop Your Leadership Skills & Make Extraordinary Things Happen
One of the most important sets of skills in our changing world are the skills of leadership. You may be wondering: What are these skills? Can anyone learn them? How do I begin?
In their book The Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner note that…
What we have discovered, and rediscovered, is that leadership is not the private reserve of a few charismatic men and women. It is the process ordinary people use when they are bringing forth the best in themselves and others. When the leader in everyone is liberated extraordinary things happen.
There are opportunities for each one of us to make a difference in our communities, in our workplaces and in the world at large.
Leadership Begins With Self Awareness
When most of us think about becoming leaders we think about what we will be doing and who we will get to help us. This makes sense because leadership is about taking action and getting things done.
You might be surprised to learn that this is only half of the equation. The other half of the equation is self-awareness. We can’t begin to lead others until we know ourselves. Here are some questions to get you started:
What are your values?
What do you believe in?
What are your strengths?
What are your weaknesses?
How do you deal with stress?
How do you manage conflict?
There are many ways to develop as a leader. You will find opportunities to get involved in your community. Most organizations today are hoping that employees will step into leadership roles and are willing to provide education and training. The first step is always knowing what you want to do and beginning the process of knowing who you are.
In the upcoming months I will be sharing additional resources and tools to help you develop your leadership potential. You can take the following steps right now:
